Here is the short answer: as of September 8, 2026, Cainiao's restricted-item checker still marks “mooncakes” as not shippable to the United States and classifies them as food.
Do not buy mooncakes and send them to the consolidation warehouse first. If you need them for Mid-Autumn Festival, a U.S. Asian supermarket or domestic online seller is the safer choice.

The confusing part is that Cainiao's U.S. website listed an air food line with tax included when we checked on September 1. A food route does not mean every food is accepted. The item-level checker still rejected mooncakes, tea, and nuts.
Buy for the festival, or wait for a clearance price?
Mooncakes at U.S. Asian supermarkets and online stores are often most expensive before and during Mid-Autumn Festival. For example, the Yami listing for a MEI-XIN lava custard mooncake gift box showed $75.99 when we checked it on September 1. Prices above $60 for similar MEI-XIN gift boxes are not unusual.

From my own observations, some U.S. Asian supermarkets cut gift boxes priced above $60 to the $30 range the day after the festival. A week later, clearance prices can reach around $10; if inventory remains much longer, a few boxes may even appear at $3 or $1. This is personal observation, not a promise about any store, brand, or year. Always check the expiration date and storage condition before buying clearance food.
If you want mooncakes on the festival day and do not mind the price difference, buy them locally from a U.S. Asian supermarket or retailer such as Yami. If your priority is trying one cheaply, waiting for post-festival clearance may work, but popular flavors can sell out first.
Do these two checks before ordering
First, enter the specific item name in Cainiao's restricted-item checker and select the United States. Do not search only for “gift” or “snack.”
Second, if the result says “not shippable,” stop. Do not buy the item for the warehouse. If the item is missing from the checker or the result is unclear, send the product link and ingredient list to Cainiao customer service before purchasing.
The U.S. promo code USAVE can only be used at international shipping checkout for eligible items. It cannot make mooncakes or another restricted item shippable.
